Shit And Shine 'Rum And Coke' album cover
Lettering design for underground music legends
Shit And Shine are prolific, inventive, twisted, experimental, heavy, transgressive underground noise/rhythm band, celebrating their twentieth year in 2024.
For their new album 'Rum And Coke', released on Riot Season Records, band main man Craig Clouse had an artwork concept that paid deep homage to Krautrock legends Neu!, albeit with a piss-taking edge that will be recognisable to anybody that is familiar with Shit And Shine.
The first Neu! album, released in 1972, has iconic artwork that simply features their name, hand-drawn. I recreated the style, colour, and positioning of the lettering for the 'Rum And Coke' cover lettering, paying careful attention to the original album's letterforms. The aim was to capture its spirit, funnel it through a cheeky word, and create a piece that was respectfully inspired by the Neu! lettering, in order for those 'in the know' to understand and appreciate the joke.
As Riot Season label boss Andy Smith puts it: "Craig had the original idea, but neither he or myself could’ve got it looking this good. Simon offered assistance and knocked it out the park."
'Rum And Coke' is available from 3 May 2024 via Riot Season Records.
